Satellite Launch Vehicles in India

The first type of Satellite Launch Vehicle used in India was an SLV. The first SLV ever launched was in 1979 and the last SLV launched was in 1983. It carried satellites weighing 40 kgs to space.

The second type of Satellite Launch Vehicle used in India was an ASLV (Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle).  The first ASLV ever launched was in 1987 and the last ASLV launched was in 1994. It carried satellites weighing 150 kgs to space.

The third type of Satellite Launch Vehicle used in India was a PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle). The first PSLV ever launched was in 1993 and the last PSLV launched was in 2019 and it still continues to be used. It carries satellites weighing 1678 kgs to space. The fourth type of Satellite Launch Vehicle used in India was a GSLV (Geo Synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle). The first GSLV ever launched was in 2001 and the last PSLV launched was in 2018 and it still continues to be used. It carries satellites weighing 5000 kgs to space. GSLV launches satellites that are used for communication.
If successful, it would be India’s first launch vehicle qualified for human space flight.
